This Blog Post: Helping Voiceover Artists To Begin Their Unique Journey.
Where Do I start?
Great question! Start by asking what your free time would be. A time within the day that you would be available for recordings. This doesn't have to be the same times every day, however to be able to provide a service either full or part time, I would recommend that you are really honest with yourself.
Can I Make Money?
Like all freelance or self employment, the income isn't guaranteed. You usually get out what you're able to put in. It takes time to build up a client base, determination and a thick skin to be able to accept repeated rejections and brutal feedback relating to your voiceover work. That said, with a foundation of the right skills both within voiceover and audio editing, a good standard of ability and most importantly excellent work ethics, you'll be well on your way towards the start of your very own Voiceover business.
Do I Need A Studio?
Yes. Whether this would be access to one nearby or your own set up.
Will I Have To Work Full Time?
Usually, yes. However, you can also make money from being a part time Voiceover, as long as you are always open relating to your availability times.
How Do I Get Work?
By showcasing your demo reels, creating an online presence, networking and building connections in person and via social media, would be a good start.
Are There Different Types Of Voiceover Work?
Yes. Voiceovers are everywhere! On the radio, at museums, in the cinema and even inflight entertainment and public transport. What you decide to specialise within, will really depend on your demo reels and even your passion.
How Do I decide What Type Of Voiceover Work Would Be Good For Me?
Get a professional demo reel produced, in fact make that two! This is where you book time with a studio that provides the facility to produce demo reels for Voiceover Artists of all levels of experience. The producers and sound engineers working for the production company should be experienced enough to be honest with you to guide and direct you to focus on your particular potential vocal strengths. TIP: During your session, ask what your voice would be described as; keywords. These keywords or voice description will be required a lot when you begin to build your online presence. The production studio usually provide you with scripts to read from. Why not get started today by listening around and paying attention to Voiceovers you feel you could also do?
Should I Buy Equipment For My Own Voiceover Recording Studio?
When you have at least two demo reels professionally produced and are confident that you would be able to provide a service for potential clients, I would always recommend a set up of your own. It doesn't need to be expensive and you can be really creative with setting up a little quiet area to record. Google Voiceover Recording Setups Budget, and you'll see some creative ideas. FYI, I started out recording from a clothes cupboard, just make sure you're opening the door for fresh air in the summertime!
Great! I hope you were able to find substance and motivation from this Blog post, which should ultimately provide enough information to help you decide on your next steps. Voiceover work can be very rewarding, challenging and from my experience there's never one day the same. Sound like you?
